Not Your Average Improv - One Rule Improv

Make Improv Your Own was created to fill a huge need in the world of improv.

After years of working with a great many people, helping them learn the basics of my favorite comedic art form, I’ve learned that after only a single experience they go home or to work and try to teach and share improv with others.

While it is wonderful that they had fun and recognized the transformative power of improv, they soon realize that replicating their experience with improv for others is not as obvious or as easy as they thought.

What if there was a way you could not only gain the benefits of improv, but you could facilitate a similar experience for others, especially for those most in need of the benefits it offers?

The positivity of the One Rule Improv program has a lot to offer the girls involved in Ron Jackson. After observing it in action, I believe the format and small group setting provides the social safety the girls need to show vulnerability and at the same time, feel and extend empathy to others. For justice-involved girls that can be empowering.

Meet your Instructor

Mary DeMichele

After 25 years of witnessing what improv could do for people, especially for those who suffer from the effects of trauma, I posed a greater question, “Could this be empirically proven neurobiologically?”

To answer that question I set out to conduct a study that was peer-reviewed, published and that clearly demonstrated changes in the brain.

I found that engaging for as few as 15 minutes in this very basic non-intimidating activity, the most hyper-aroused or hypo aroused teens could indeed engage the part of their brain that makes them open to social interaction, learning, and therapy. This breakthrough study is the first of its kind, and it scientifically proves what many of us in this field have known for years:

Teach

Improv Has the Power to Change Lives

For over two decades I have helped thousands of people in education, clinical, professional, and social settings take their first critical steps in the world of improv, showing them that there’s much more to this art form than getting a few laughs.

I am so excited to continue to share this incredibly simple, accessible process that anyone can engage in and teach, and in doing so help others and the people around them to engage and connect, leading to a far richer life as a whole.

Is the approach used in this course the same approach that was used in the published study?

Yes, it is. The approach to learning and teaching improv, as well as the instructional techniques used are the same.

I have no experience in improv. Will I really be able to complete this course?
Absolutely. The One Rule Improv approach, as it simplifies the process of learning and teaching improv, makes improv accessible to the beginner, whether they may be outgoing or introverted. It is carefully designed, so that each module is built off the one before, allowing you time to experience and apply what you learn before moving on to the next.
I am worried that when doing improv, a person might be emotionally triggered/upset

There are many improvisational games and activities that utilize situational role-playing activities, are not framed by the rule of “Yes, and…” or don’t feature collaboration as a central theme. These are the types of activities that may trigger someone emotionally.

In contrast, this program uses collaborative short-form improv games framed by “Yes, and…” which help individuals achieve a more neurologically balanced state. Players move into a better mental state, are focused on the present and are highly unlikely to be emotionally triggered by the past. Specific facilitation strategies used in this approach also limit the chance of triggering an individual.

I am an experienced improviser. Is this course for me?

Are there other resources available?

Yes. The Improv Video Library will be available with a membership after the completion of the Make Improv Your Own Online or the Improv ‘n Ink Course. This resource includes improv games presented in video format and supported with written resources so that you can quickly and confidently find games, plans and resources that work for you and your people.

I find it to be a great way to create flow in conversations and help the brain’s defenses to drop. I also utilize the “Yes and” language in general with my own language with others and teaching it to clients I work with. It seems like such a small difference from “Yes but,” and on a neurobiological level it is experienced totally different, and that difference makes a 1000% difference in flow in communication and feeling seen, heard, and validated.
